Whenever I tell people what I do for a living, they can hardly believe this job exists. But I'm not joking! I spend my days at work eating chocolate! Tasting the chocolate is an essential part of making sure that customers get perfect bars of high-quality chocolate from the company I work for. Every week I receive samples, small amounts that show what the chocolate is like, from our factory and I have to check them for taste, texture and smell. I also have to taste the raw materials we usually use- the nuts, fruit and so on. I spend days choosing the most suitable ones to go into the chocolate. Just beside my company office I have a kitchen where I can test and taste products I make- and I keep my colleagues happy by giving them samples! My kitchen is full of machines and ingredients to play with. It's wonderful to have a private space I can go off to during the day. No two days are the same in this job. Sometimes I am at our food lab and others I'm out of the country buying our raw materials and as I've got a young family that can be difficult. But that kind of variety, and lack of routine, is something I love about the job, although I think it still comes second to the chocolate itself! The question I get asked most is whether I get bored of chocolate. I've worked with it for a long time, and I've never felt I didn't want to eat it. In fact, I'll often go home and eat some more in the evening!

Which one would be an advert for the chocolate company James works for?

A.
Every single bar of chocolate that leaves our factory is tested for its taste.
B.
We choose only the best ingredients - just chocolate beans, sugar and milk. We don't add anything else.
C.
We check everything that goes into our chocolate, so that you can enjoy the best chocolate possible.
D.
We're proud of being so environmentally friendly - all our ingredients are bought

Dear friends,
We, the workers at The Caring Kitchen, want to thank you for helping us offer free cookery lessons for families. Together, we've raised £2,000 for food for the classes, so families can learn to cook healthy meals. Children at a local school have made and sold jewellery to raise money. Many of you have asked family members to give money to The Caring Kitchen instead of giving a birthday present. And many people have given money through our website, and have shared it on social media!
Your money and time helped us teach 100 families how to cook healthier meals this month! We hope to teach 200 next month. A group of grocery-shop owners have given us 300 bags of rice, 300 bags of beans and a lot of fruit and vegetables, so we'll be able to teach even more families! The Caring Kitchen started when my wife, Heidi, and I learnt that many of our son's classmates didn't eat healthy food Because their parents didn't know how to cook it, didn't think they had the time or thought it was too expensive. I've worked in restaurants for years, and know how simple and cheap it really is to cook healthy meals. Heidi is a nurse, and has seen a lot of people get healthier when they started eating healthier foods. We use the money we raise to buy food for classes. We give free classes Because we want everyone to learn how to cook healthy food, even if they don't have much money.
Because we are trying to serve even more families, we need more volunteers to teach the classes and pick up fooD. Would you like to volunteer for us? Just reply to this email and I'll tell you what to do. And if you would like to give money or food, please email us at [email protected]. Thank you again for all your help!
Warm regards, Omar Reyes (and team)

I used to work as a fashion model, but it's been a long time since I've been part of a fashion photo project. But at 6 A.m. yesterday three cars arrived at the farm where I now live, and a group of 13 people got out. It was very busy from the moment they all arrived. The team in charge of clothes had brought so many that they had to work outside. I couldn't believe it! The hair and make-up teams used the big kitchen. They didn't let me in there. "Don't touch his hair," said the photographer. "That's perfect for the photo. I love it."
The clothes used in fashion photography are all tiny. But to my surprise, most of the clothes weren't too small for me. There was, though, a very tight jacket which I couldn't close. A lady took a pair of scissors and, amazingly, immediately cut straight up the back with one hand while closing the buttons at the front with the other and after just a minute, I was dressed. The photographer had got everything ready in a field near the farmhouse. Someone had turned some music up loud and a lot of people were laughing and drinking coffee. It looked like a really fun party. Everybody was so very busy, the whole time. The photographer's two assistants seemed to be working the hardest. He took hundreds of photos on many different cameras, so they were moving the equipment around all the time. We did six completely different scenes in less than three hours. That's Olympic speed. Then they left as quickly as they'd arrived. What a great experience!
What is the writer doing in this text?
A.
telling people about how hard it is to work in fashion
B.
describing what a fashion photo project can be like
C.
advising people to have a career in fashion
D.
telling people about the importance of the fashion industry

Shopping used to be my favourite activity. It started when I was a teenager and I worked in a clothes shop. I had a staff discount in the shop and I used to spend all my wages on clothes. When I got a job in an office I carried on spending all my spare money on clothes - even after I had got married, bought a house and had children! I used to go shopping every weekend and I probably spent about 500 a month on clothes. It wasn't something I only did when I wasn't very happy, I always went shopping however I felt. Sometimes I'd look for ages to find what I wanted. Other times, I'd just buy the first thing I saw. Most of the things I didn't need. One day I bought three pairs of boots, even though I already had another ten pairs at home. I never even took the most expensive pair out of the box! I realised I had a problem when one day my five-year-old daughter looked into my wardrobe and asked me why I had so many handbags. I counted them. I had seventy five handbags and they must have cost me thousands of pounds. I couldn't believe what I'd done! First of all, I threw away my credit card. Then I gave away all the clothes that I'd never worn. After that I made arrangements every Saturday to visit friends or go on a day trip, so I wouldn't be able to go shopping. What is the writer's main aim in writing the text?
A.
to advise people how to shop sensibly
B.
to talk about her expensive way of living
C.
to describe her addiction to shopping
D.
to talk about different fashions

Last year I went to Nepal for three months to work in a hospital. I think it's important to see as much of a country as you can, but it is difficult to travel around Nepal. The hospital let me have a few days’ holiday, so I decided to go into the jungle and I asked a Nepalese guide, Kamal Rai, to go with me. We started preparing for the trip at six in the morning, and left camp with two elephants carrying our equipment. It was hot but Kamal made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. In the jungle there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find big cats, especially tigers. We climbed onto the elephants' backs to get better view, but it is unusual to find tigers in the afternoon because they sleep in the heat of the day. Then, in the distance, we saw a tiger, and Kamal told me to be very quiet. We crept nearer and found a dead deer, still bleeding. This was the tiger's lunch! Suddenly I started to feel very frightened. We heard the tiger a second before we saw it. It jumped out like a flash of lightning, five hundred kilos plus and four meters long. I looked into its eyes and face, and saw right down the animal's throat. It grabbed Kamal's leg between its teeth, but I managed to pull Kamal away. One of our elephants ran at the tiger and made it go back into the grass, so we quickly escaped to let the tiger eat its lunch. That night it was impossible to sleep!
It's difficult to find tigers in the afternoon because .
A.
they usually sleep at this time of the day
B.
it's so hot at this time
C.
the elephants' back wasn't high enough to get a view
D.
tigers hardly hunt in the heat of the day

It is widely felt that this has a positive impact _____students. It should also be said that Oxford's shorter eight-week terms provide greater opportunity to work during the holidays. “Yes Man” is the best book I've ever read. It's the true story of a year in the life of author Danny Wallace. Before Danny Wallace became the "Yes Man', his life was boring and he felt old. So he decided to make things more exciting. He started saying yes to every question people asked him. And he did it for a whole year. From the day he started, it completely changed his life, and he had all kinds of adventures. It's a fantastic story. When I finished the book, I wanted to change my life like Danny Wallace. So I took a holiday from work and became a “Yes Man” for a week. This is what happened.
Day 1
I started on Saturday morning. At 10 am, I got my first question. I saw a poster in the window of a travel agents. It said, Tired? (Yes - I slept badly the night before, so I was tired.) Under this, it said, 'Do you need a holiday?' (Yes, definitely.) So I went in. The travel agent asked, me where I wanted to go. But before I could answer, she said, 'Somewhere hot?' I don't like hot weather, but I said, “Yes.” “A beach holiday? Maybe in Greece?' I don't like the beach ‹I prefer cities) But I said, 'Yes.” “What kind of accommodation? A hotel? Or a ...” I hate hotels, but before she could continue, I said, 'Yes? Five minutes later, everything was ready. My flight was the next day.
Day 2
I arrived at my hotel on the island of Zante at lunchtime. It was very, very hot. I just wanted to check in and unpack my suitcase, but the receptionist said, We have a minibus to the beach in ten minutes. Do you want to go?" You know the answer I gave her. It was about 40°C at the beach. Luckily, I brought suntan lotion. A man came towards me: Sunglasses? Do you want sunglasses?' I had some in my bag, but I said, 'Yes? Five minutes later, another man came: 'Beautiful hat, sir? I tried not to look at him. Three hours later, I had two pairs of sunglasses, three hats, a watch and a woman's necklace. It was difficult to carry all my new things back to the minibus. I decided: no trips tomorrow, just rest. When I got back, the receptionist asked, “Did you like the beach?” I didn't, but I said, 'Yes.' “Oh, there's a water skiing course tomorrow. Do you want me to book a place for you?" I can't swim very well, and I don't like the sea. I wanted to cry ...
3. What is true according to the story?
A.
He booked a beach holiday.
B.
He booked the kind of holiday he usually likes.
C.
He was going to fly in five minutes.
D.

What is James Waltham doing in the text?
A.
recommending the best ways to test chocolate
B.
describing what personal qualities are needed to do his job
C.
telling readers what makes his job worth doing for him
D.
suggesting different methods of making chocolate

Last year I went on an amazing trip- travelling by boat on a guided group tour along the west coast of Canada. It was my brother Harry's idea. He's a journalist, like me, and he wanted to write articles about the trip. He's also a great fan of boats, although that's one interest we definitely don't share. But I'd dreamt of visiting the area ever since seeing it on TV as a child, especially as I knew it was where our great-grandparents had lived before moving to Europe. So I kept asking Harry if I could go too until he finally agreed! A few weeks before we left home, there were storms in the area we were going to. But luckily the forecast for the time we intended to be there was for calm seas. Although there was plenty to arrange, I was busy at work so didn't have much time to think about what needed doing. But Harry promised he'd taken care of everything, so I knew everything would be all right. After arriving in Canada, we joined the group, packed our limited supplies into small boats and set off. The guide had mentioned that very few people now lived along that coast, and sure enough, the only other living creatures we saw for the first few days were dolphins and birds. We knew there were islands in the distance, but the early-morning fog made it hard to see very far, so I just focused on the beautiful patterns our boat made in the water. We often stopped for hours to explore the rock pools on the beaches. They were full of amazing coloured fish, many of which I didn't recognise. And it was great to be able to stop caring about how quickly or slowly the day was passing. We never forgot lunch or dinner, though, which we all made together over camp fires. When we finally fell asleep on the boats each evening, even though the beds were hard, it really felt like stress-free living! When the time came to leave, I was sad. How could I return to normal life again? But I knew if I stayed, I'd miss family and friends. I was also looking forward to telling everyone at home about our adventures!
During the trip, Louise enjoyed

B.

C.
spending the nights in comfort.
D.
not having to worry about time.

Are you looking for a boyfriend or a girlfriend? Do you want to meet new people? Lots of people meet their new partner over the Internet. It is particularly popular in the USA, where about 30% of people meet their boyfriend or girlfriend online. We talked to some young people in Ireland about their experiences of internet dating. Joanna, 23, Cork: “I am dating a man I met on the Internet. His name is Gavin and he is gorgeous. We have the same hobbies and we laugh about the same things. We rarely argue and our relationship is perfect. I'm so happy.” Stephen, 28, Dublin: “I normally wouldn't meet someone through the Internet because I don't think it's particularly safe. People can say anything or show a photo that isn't of them. I think that's awful. I want to meet someone who is normal. You generally don't know who you are meeting online.” Colm, 22, Galway: “I mainly meet girls through the Internet. I really like it. It's fun. Most girls are pretty and some are not, but they are normally friendly and hardly ever rude. And it's definitely never boring. I don't especially want a girlfriend at the moment. I'm happy to meet different girls. Some people think I'm strange, but I'm just enjoying my life.” There might be some problems with meeting people online, but lots of people are doing it these days, and it helps people meet new people and make new friends. Good luck!
