Reading passage 1 (15-22): A Trip to the Scottish Highlands

Last summer, my family and I decided to go on a trip that was very different from our usual beach holidays. We went to the Scottish Highlands, a mountainous region in the northwest of Scotland. The journey from our home in London was quite long, taking nearly ten hours by train, but the views from the window were absolutely fascinating. As we travelled further north, the busy cities were replaced by green hills and deep, dark lakes, known as 'lochs'. Our hotel was a small, old-fashioned building near Loch Ness, which is famous for its legendary monster. It was much quieter than the big, modern hotels we usually stay in. During our week there, we did a lot of outdoor activities. We went trekking in the hills, which was more challenging than I had expected because the paths were quite steep. My dad, who loves photography, took hundreds of photos of the amazing landscapes. One day, we took a boat trip on Loch Ness. The water was freezing, even in summer, but the experience was fantastic. 

We didn't see the monster, of course, but the guide told us many interesting stories. The local food was also a highlight. We tried a traditional dish called haggis, which sounds strange but was surprisingly tasty. It was much heartier and simpler than the food in big cities, but it was perfect after a long day of walking. In the evenings, we didn't have a TV in our room, which was unusual for us. Instead, we played board games together or read books by the fireplace in the hotel lounge. It was a wonderful way to spend quality time as a family, away from all the distractions of modern life. We found that the people in the Highlands were some of the friendliest people we had ever met. This holiday wasn't as relaxing as sitting on a beach, but it was definitely the most memorable and rewarding trip we have ever had.
