Reading passage 1 (15-21): The Green Town Initiative
In the small town of Meadowville, residents were worried about the growing amount of rubbish in their streets and the pollution in their local river. Instead of waiting for someone else to solve the problem, a group of high school students decided to take action. They started an organisation called the "Green Town Initiative". Their main goal was simple: to make Meadowville a cleaner and healthier place to live. The first thing they did was to organise a town-wide clean-up day. They advertised the event in the local newspaper and on social media, and they were amazed when over two hundred people, including young children and elderly citizens, came to help. The volunteers worked harder than ever before, collecting plastic bottles, bags, and other rubbish from the parks and riverbanks. After the successful clean-up day, the students presented a plan to the town council.
Their plan included adding more rubbish bins around the town and creating a community recycling centre. They also gave a presentation at their school about how small changes, like using reusable water bottles, could make a big difference. The town council was very impressed by the students' hard work and passion. They agreed to fund the new bins and helped find a location for the recycling centre. The centre was opened a few months later, and it is now used regularly by many residents. However, the initiative didn't stop there. Their next project focused on increasing the town's green spaces. With help from a local garden centre that generously donated young trees, they organised a 'Plant-a-Tree' weekend. Dozens of families participated, planting over one hundred new trees in the main park, which made it look more beautiful than ever. Furthermore, the students created an after-school 'Eco Club' for younger children.
In this club, they taught fun lessons about protecting local wildlife and the importance of saving water and electricity at home. This educational effort was perhaps their greatest success, ensuring that the next generation in Meadowville would grow up with a strong respect for nature. The Green Town Initiative truly showed that young people can make a positive and lasting change in their community. The river is now cleaner, the streets are tidier, and people in Meadowville are more aware of environmental issues than they were before.
True or False: The people of Meadowville are now less interested in environmental problems.
